Support Worker (Complex Support)

About the Role

The Nexus Complex and Individualised Support (NCIS) team supports individuals, including young people with a range of psychosocial and intellectual disabilities, in residential and community settings.

The NCIS team is focused on providing support to clients who have a high level of capacity and decision making abilities alongside their complex support needs arising from trauma, emotional, intellectual and psychosocial issues. All roles within this team are supported by allied health based therapeutic programs, staff training, and tailored mentoring which have been designed around the individual needs of each client.

As a Support Worker with our Nexus Complex Individualised Support team you will:

    • Provide encouragement, assistance and support to allow clients to complete domestic duties such as housekeeping, cooking, cleaning, laundry and gardening and day to day decision making.

    • Provide encouragement, assistance and support to clients in their recreation and leisure activities.

    • Provide social interaction and emotional support to clients.

    • Accompany clients, when required, to a range of activities to promote maximum physical and social participation in community life.

    • Administer prescribed medication in accordance with established policies and guidelines.

    • Provide transport for clients as required.

    • Complete general domestic and maintenance duties.

    • Complete client case notes, incident reporting and uploading of documents into Nexus’ client management system.

    • Other duties may be allocated from time to time.

About You

Our Ideal Candidate will have the following:

    • Insight into disabilities and willingness to support clients to achieve their own personal goals

    • Understanding of Active Support model of support

    • Experience with psychosocial, intellectual or physical disabilities and/or mental health and trauma related issues (professionally and/or personally).

    • Ability to manage emergency situations in line with organisational policies and procedures

    • Understanding of self-care strategies to support positive professional and personal outcomes.

    • Ability to use specialised knowledge and personal strengths to support the skill development and independence of clients

    • Understanding of the NDIS and its impacts on clients and families

    • Effective communication skills, including written, verbal and non-verbal

    • Ability to build rapport with clients from a variety of backgrounds and treat them as participating members of society whilst respecting their level of knowledge and skill

    • Experience using the Microsoft suite of software including Outlook, Teams and Word, and other online systems for reporting and rostering

    • Experience with Positive Behaviour support and trauma, including Trauma Informed Practice (desirable)

Working in the disability sector means you will also need the following:

    • Current National Police Check (no more than 6 months old)

    • Current Working with Vulnerable People Card (with NDIS endorsement /employment type)

    • Current First Aid certificate (HLTAID011)

    • Unrestricted Tasmanian Driver’s license

Note: A pre-employment physical will be required for this role (including drug and alcohol testing.)
